Holy Mackarel! Chicken Joy to be made in Malaysia or Thailand soon? Failure in Philippine agriculture competitiveness? Philippines' biggest fastfood chain Jollibee mulls sourcing chicken and other raw materials to Asean neighbors
Attention to our sleeping politicians and so-called "leaders": You cannot blame private sector leaders like the respected and publicly-listed firms like Jollibee for planning to buy chickens and other foodstuffs from other Asean or Asian countries, if there is no support for and modernization in Philippine agriculture!
What are the root causes of Philippine agriculture losing out to our neighbors and other foreign countries?
Why are we importing so much foods instead of being a global exporter, since we have so much arable lands and good tropical weather?
How are our Philippine farmers and rural communities, their incomes, technologies and the other support they need to fully maximize the huge untapped potentials of Philippine agriculture?
The Philippines' biggest fast-food chain on Tuesday said it may source its chicken and other raw material requirements from other Asean countries.
Speaking at the Punongbayan & Araullo CEO Business Forum at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, Ysmael Baysa, chief financial officer of Jollibee Foods Corp, said the company "wants to be Asia's largest food service company [and is aiming to become] among the 10 largest fast-food-chains in the world."
To do this, the Jollibee group is anchoring its expansion outside the Philippines on Asean integration, which "will help accelerate business growth in the region," he said, citing the company's 23 percent annual growth in its Asean business. Tariffs are poised to go down significantly in 2015 under the Asean Free Trade Area.
Besides expanding the home-grown fast-food chain's market, Asean integration would enable the company to "lower cost of raw materials," he said.
"With lower tariffs, there can be a significant change to our sources of raw materials," he said.
