Applications for Chevening Scholarships, the prestigious global scholarship programme of the UK government, are open starting Monday, 29 October.
The Chevening programme provides a unique opportunity for leaders of the future to build a global network of continuing professional significance. It enables talented individuals to establish social, cultural, academic or commercial partnerships with the UK. With its new global website, the Chevening Scholarships are expected to be more accessible than ever before.
“Chevening Scholarships are for talented people who have been identified as potential leaders across a wide range of fields, including politics, business, finance, climate change and energy, the media, civil society and academia,” said British Ambassador Stephen Lillie, during the official launching of the programme here in Manila last week.
Aspirants from the Philippines may access the online application forms at the new Chevening website www.chevening.org and submit their applications from 29 October until 2 January 2013.
Meanwhile, the British Embassy announced that it is seeking partnerships with the private sector to maximise the Chevening Programme here in the Philippines.
“In 2012 we were able to expand the number of scholarships through a new partnership with Cambridge University.  Looking to 2013, I would like us to be able to forge additional partnerships, which will allow us to increase the number of Chevening Scholars whom we are able to fund,” Lillie added.
The British Embassy is already in talks with British pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline and several other companies on providing supplementary funding for the Chevening Programme to boost the number of scholars from the Philippines.
Lillie underscored the importance of educational links in strengthening Philippine-British relations. “British Alumni are in fact a very visible expression of the friendship between our two countries. They have studied at a diverse range of institutions across a wide range of disciplines.
The growing number of excellent young achievers, returning from the UK to the Philippines gives me confidence that the UK-Philippine relationship will continue to go from strength to strength. 2012 has been a great year for our bilateral relations, but I believe the best days for the Philippines and UK relationship lie ahead,” he concluded.
First established in 1983, the Chevening Scholarships, which are funded by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, operate in over 100 countries worldwide, and this year will support about 700 students. The Scholarships are awarded to exceptional individuals with leadership potential. Awards are typically for a one-year Master’s degree, in any subject and at any UK university.
Scholars are personally selected by British High Commissions and British Embassies throughout the world, sometimes in partnership with sponsoring organisations.
Chevening alumni have an excellent record of rising to positions of leadership across a wide range of fields: including politics, business, the media, civil society, religion, and academia.
Some work as MPs, leading journalists, or policy advisers to NGOs and think tanks; others occupy senior positions in commercial organisations.
Priority subject areas vary from country to country and applicants should check the country pages of www.chevening.org before submitting an application for a Chevening Scholarship.
