11 rare Philippine frog species endangered! Is this a sign of alarming deterioration of our Philippine natural environment and the accelerating ecological degradation?

I originally thought this email from former Philippine Senator Miguel "Migz" Zubiri to me on a Sunday---today---was a joke, but this is a serious and troubling problem. Many of our political, business and other leaders are not aware of environmental dangers.

Wake up! I suggest scientists, environmentalists and others study and take pro-active, positive actions!

If frogs are not surviving well, what about our rural communities, what about us human beings?

11 rare Philippine frog species fast dying out! Alarm raised by former Philippine Senator Zubiri

At least 11 rare Philippine frog species are fast dying out due to rapid environmental degradation, former Sen. Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri, Pilipinas Ecowarriors convenor, said on January 13, 2013.

The frogs have just been added to the Philippines’ official list of “threatened” species, and tagged either vulnerable or endangered, according to Zubiri, former chairman of the Senate environment and natural resources committee.

He identified them, based on their common names, as the Mindanao fanged frog, Mindoro tree frog, Hazel’s forest frog, Gigante Island limestone frog, Lawton’s forest frog, Negros forest tree frog, Polillo Island forest tree frog,  Rabor’s forest frog, Negros limestone frog, Mt. Data cloud frog, and Taylor’s Igorot frog.

“This is very unfortunate because most if not all of these frogs are found only in the Philippines. The decline of these extraordinary frogs indicates that our ecosystems are being polluted much faster than previously thought,” Zubiri said.

Ecologists have agreed that frogs are among the most excellent indicators of ecological health, Zubiri said.
“Since frogs breathe and drink through their skin, they are directly exposed to their surroundings, whether these are forests, mountain streams, fast-flowing rivers, lakes, and ponds,” he pointed out.

The former senator from Mindanao region in southern Philippines also acknowledged that the invasion of foreign frog species carrying the highly infections amphibian chytrid fungus may also be contributing to the collapse some local frogs.

The fungus attacks the skin of frogs and destroys their ability to “drink” water and absorb vital salts.

Frogs play a crucially important role in the maze of life and in the food chain.

They prey on insects, including mosquitoes, as wells as pests such as locusts that could possibly damage farm crops.

The predators of frogs include humans, birds, monitor lizards, snakes, civet cats and other frogs.

Species are officially tagged “threatened” once their habitats have suffered extreme depletion and their populations have shrunk to a level below which the species or subspecies will be totally extinct.

Threatened species are further sub-classified either as vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.

Vulnerable species are under threat from serious adverse factors all over their range and are believed likely to drop to the endangered category in the near future.

Endangered species are at great risk of being wiped out and survival is unlikely if casual factors continue to function.

The Philippines keeps a registry of wildlife species of priority concern for protection and conservation, in compliance with existing international and national laws. The catalogue is updated regularly by the Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau.

Zubiri renewed his proposal for “highly focused conservation efforts at the provincial level” to look after threatened species, and safeguard local biodiversity.

Zubiri’s Pilipinas Ecowarriors is a non-profit, registered non-governmental group that keeps watch over potential violators of environmental protection and conservation laws, including wildlife poachers.

Despite our Philippine society having so many bad clowns and buffoons in our politics and government, God has still blessed us with one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth ideal for tourism.

I predict the Philippines becoming the next Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia of Asia, despite our still horrible airports, basic infrastructures and still surfeit of incompetent government officials.

MANILA, Philippines—A surfing mecca and a luxury island getaway in the Philippines are included in the 46 must-see places in the world based on a list published online by the New York Times.

In the list,  ”The 46 Places to go in 2013″, Siargao and El Nido were chosen by editors of the internationally-read broadsheet.

“Idyllic white sand beaches, secluded, little-known surf towns, and pristine reefs are among the natural draws of this country,” it said.

The article raved about how “luxe” the country’ surfing and beach destinations are.

“The new Dedon Island resort on Siargao, for example, is close to one of the world’s best surf breaks, Cloud 9 (Kelly Slater is a fan), and has an outdoor cinema along with spa and paddle board classes. And the private island resort of El Nido Pangulasian opens this month in the Unesco biosphere of Palawan, right by some of the world’s most pristine diving spots. ”

Aside from the Philippines, only two other Southeast Asian nations were included: Singapore and Thailand (which appeared on the list twice). Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s capital, topped the list. “Because the whole world will be there in 2014 (World Cup)” it said.

Just this month, the Philippines is Conde Nast Traveller’s “new flame,” listing it among the magazine’s 10 “hot destinations to watch” this year. (http://www.interaksyon.com/article/51756/conde-nasts-new-flame–philippines-among-10-hot-destinations-of-2013)

The influential travel magazine said the Philippines, with its “most heavenly” 7,000 islands, has not made it as “the most obvious beach-holiday destination, but it soon will be.”

Even the hit US reality TV show Survivor could not get enough of the nation’s exotic islands. Just as the hit US reality show’s  25th season closed last month, it was announced that Survivor would again have its next season in Caramoan, one of the pristine islands in Camarines Sur, Bicol.

Caramoan has been a favorite site for various non-US Survivor franchises. The countries that have shot Survivor seasons in Caramoan include: Serbia, Israel, Bulgaria, Sweden, and France.

Last November, Malacanang expressed optimism that the country’s tourist arrival, one the the region’s perennial laggards, will get a big boost from international recognition the Philippines has been receiving. Some 4 million tourists arrive in the country every year, a far cry from Thailand’s 20 million annual arrivals

Is a crash going to soon hit the Philippine stock market---now already "the most expensive in Asia", red hot and the bull run already in its 4th year? This question I read in a newspaper column yesterday, and heard some businessmen asking me in recent weeks about "irrational exuberance" or "stocks too high?"

My opinions? I hope no "crash", but just occasional corrections are healthy. The Philippine economy is doing good, and we have positive prospects. Asia is also flourishing. However, uncertainties remain in the older economic powers of still struggling USA economy, a stagnant Japan economy and a still problematic Western Europe....

Is this question of a possible or imminent "crash" due to speculative fever in our stock market? Is the seemingly nonstop and record-breaking zooming of stock prices sustainable, realistic?

Indeed, if more people buy into the hype on unstoppable stocks boom, then stocks can get valued higher than they should really be, then some dangers may be possible and should be avoided?

The so-called "hot money" or footloose investment funds in the stock market can vanish or run way in split seconds or overnight, affected by the vagaries of human emotions, fears, greed, and sheer exuberance?

Of course a strong stock market is good news for the Philippine economy, but what about speculations?

How can we have a stronger, more broad-based, stable and healthier Philippine stock market?

MONEY MATTERS

Is the PH stock market going to crash soon?

By Henry Ong, Philippine Daily Inquirer

Question: Many are optimistic that the stock market will continue to be bullish this year with the index likely to reach an all-time high of 6,500. While this is definitely good news, I am beginning to feel uncomfortable as share prices are already very high. I am not sure if I should buy more or start selling at the current level. Can you advise me?—Gigi F. by e-mail

Answer: If you want to take advantage of the current bullish momentum, you can trade for short-term gain by buying one of the most active stocks and sell it immediately as soon it makes a profit.

This is actually fun but it be can be risky. If the stock fails to move up as expected, you may have to sell it at a loss to recover your cash at once. If you choose to hold on to it in the hope that the stock will improve later, you may risk losing more if the stock suddenly takes a sharp fall.

While it is true that the market enjoys strong economic fundamentals and liquidity flows, the potential for further upside at the moment may be limited as stocks have become expensive by Price-to-Earnings (P/E) valuation.

In fact, the Philippine market, which has market P/E of 19x is relatively more expensive than Singapore or Hong Kong, which has market P/E of only about 12x. To justify the current share prices, corporate earnings must demonstrate exceptional earnings growth to bring down P/E valuations.

If you are deciding whether to buy or sell, consider analyzing this from a risk and reward ratio. Let’s assume the market falls from its current level of 6,055, the immediate support would be 5,866, which gives a 3.1-percent loss. If, on the other hand, the market continues its uptrend and the first resistance is 6,130, you will get 1.2 percent return.

If the probability is high that the market will stop at 6,130, it may not be a good idea to buy at this point because you will risk more in order to gain. It will be wise to start taking profits on some stocks, especially those that have become expensive and invest the cash proceeds to cheaper stocks or simply keep it at the bank until another opportunity arises.

If the prospect of further upside is limited, does this mean that the market may crash soon?

Not necessarily. It only means that the current uptrend may be reaching its terminal phase because share prices are trading well above their underlying values caused by market traders who are bidding shares based on overly optimistic earnings assumptions.

The index must eventually correct itself by falling to levels acceptable to the market. It can fall by as much as 10 percent over a period of time.  Corrections are inevitable. What goes up must come down.

In a bull market scenario, any price dip is considered temporary because you expect the stock to recover again. In fact, it is during this time when you take the opportunity to buy back stocks at a lower price for another market run-up. However, if the trend has reversed, any share price rally will be minimal and the selling will continue and possibly accelerate the market downwards.

Do you know that a bull market lasts for three to four years? Our current bull run actually started last March 2009 and it will be celebrating its 4th anniversary this March 2013. Could the end of the bull market be near?

No one knows when this will happen but there are signs that the market is ripe for massive correction. Do you see more of your friends now talking about stock market than in the previous years? Do you see people discussing about stocks more than usual at Facebook, Twitter or online forums? Do you hear radio and TV shows discussing about opportunities in stock market more often than before? Are newspapers featuring stock market news or stories on the front page? Are brokers and fund managers making bold forecast that the index may reach 7,000 level this year?

As more people talk about making money from stocks, more people will get into the market hoping that they will also make a fortune. As buying of stocks increases, people will be chasing stocks and drive share prices above their intrinsic values. Market psychology will tell you that this could be a sign that the party will be over soon.

This is the best time for you to assess your portfolio and evaluate your positions. You may have to reallocate some of your stock investments into other assets for the moment as you wait for the market to correct.
Yes, you will probably feel some regrets as you say goodbye to your favorite stocks for now especially if you see the stock continue rising after you have sold it. There is no way you can catch the market top and maximize your profit. Start selling gradually. Sell while it feels good.

Do not wait for the market to fall before you start selling. You may not be able to sell it at the price you want because you will be rushing to sell down for fear that the share prices may go lower.

Just like the perfect punch that knocked out the “Pacman,” it only takes a single bad news to knock this market down so be careful and watchful.

Kudos to Asia! Apple, Inc. boss just said that booming China will soon surpass USA as the world's biggest market! Let us all work harder to help our entire region to benefit from unprecedented economic progress!

We are truly witnessing the rise of a new world order in the 21st century, of the resurgence of Asia again as the center of world civilization, socio-economic progress and hopefully long-term harmony as well.

“I believe it will become our first,” Cook said in an interview with state-owned Xinhua News yesterday. No timeframe was given for the prediction. The Cupertino, California-based company had $5.7 billion of sales in China during the quarter ended September. U.S. revenue was about $14.4 billion, based on figures in an Oct. 25 earnings statement.

Cook also met the chairman of China Mobile Ltd. (941) while in the country, as he seeks to boost cooperation with a wireless operator that has 707 million customers and no agreement to sell iPhones. The CEO is making his second visit to the country in less than a year as Apple tries to reverse its shrinking share of the local smartphone market.

Apple intends to open “many more” outlets in China over the next several years, Cook said in the Xinhua interview. The company now has 11 stores in China and Hong Kong.

Cook also said he would also “love” to introduce new products in China first, according to the report. The iPhone 5 was released in China in December, almost three months after the U.S. introduction.

China Growth

The company’s growth in the world’s most populous nation has been limited by it only working with smaller carriers and competition from domestic phone-makers. Its share of the nation’s smartphone market slipped to sixth from fourth in the third quarter, according to researcher IDC.

Yesterday, Cook met with Xi Guohua, the chairman on China Mobile at the carrier’s headquarters in Beijing. The two discussed “cooperation,” according to a statement from China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless operator by subscribers. It didn’t elaborate.

China Mobile, which accounts for 64 percent of the nation’s mobile users, said last month that it needs to reach agreements on benefit-sharing with Apple before it can begin offering iPhones. The operator also has a homegrown third-generation network that isn’t used by other carriers.

Apple distributes iPhone with the nation’s second- and third-largest carriers: China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd. (762) and China Telecom Corp. (728)

100 million Christians persecuted worldwide, shocking, what are the rest of us Christians doing?

It is so sad to hear Christians being persecuted. I am for respect for all religions.

Let us---whatever our faith---hope, pray and work for protection of Christians and peoples of other faiths from religious persecutions or oppression!

Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world today, this is a tragedy, let us change this situation.

About 100 million Christians persecuted around the world: report

PARIS | Tue Jan 8, 2013 11:41pm IST
PARIS (Reuters) - About 100 million Christians are persecuted around the world, with conditions worsening for them most rapidly in Syria and Ethiopia, according to an annual report by a group supporting oppressed Christians worldwide.
Open Doors, a non-denominational Christian group, listed North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan as the three toughest countries for Christians last year. They topped the 50-country ranking for 2011 as well.
Syria jumped from 36th to 11th place on the list as its Christian minority, first suspected by rebels of close ties to the Assad government, has increasingly become a target for radical Islamist fighters, the report said.

Ethiopia, which is two-thirds Christian, shot up from 38th to 15th place in the ranking due to a "complex mix of persecution dynamics" including attacks by radical Islamists and reprisals by traditional Christians against new Protestant movements.

Mali came from no listing for 2011 to 7th place because the sharia rule the Islamist Ansar Dine group imposed on the north of the country not only brought harsh punishments for the Muslim majority but also drove the tiny Christian minority, it said.

"There are over 65 countries where Christians are persecuted," said the report released on Tuesday by Open Doors, which began in the 1950s smuggling Bibles into communist states and now works in more than 60 countries.

"An estimated 100 million Christians worldwide are persecuted," the United States-based group said in the report. All but one of the 50 countries in the list - Colombia, which ranked 46th - were in Africa, Asia or the Middle East.

Christianity is the largest and most widely spread faith in the world, with 2.2 billion followers or 32 percent of the world population, according to a report by the Washington-based Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

It faces restrictions and hostility in 111 countries around the world, ahead of the 90 countries limiting or harassing the second-largest faith, Islam, another Pew report said.

"In recent years, we've been hearing that Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world - that sounds right to us," said Open Doors France director Michel Varton at a presentation of the report in Strasbourg.

PERSECUTION

Leaders of various denominations - including Pope Benedict, whose Roman Catholic followers account for more than half of all Christians - increasingly make this accusation.

It may well be the case given Christianity's size and global spread, but it is hard to produce enough reliable comparative statistics to give it a solid empirical basis.

Some German politicians and human rights groups criticized Chancellor Angela Merkel last November for saying this at a Protestant Church conference there, saying it was pointless to try to rank religions according to how persecuted they were.

Open Doors, which documents cases of persecution of Christians, said its report was based on official studies, news reports and field reports and questionnaires filled out by its staff workers around the world.

Of the top 10 countries on the list - North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Maldives, Mali, Iran, Yemen and Eritrea - eight are majority Muslim states threatened by what Open Doors called "Islamic extremism".

North Korea has kept its number one ranking for the past 11 years because it is illegal simply to be a Christian there, it said. Open Doors estimates that up to 70,000 North Koreans have been sent to labor camps for their faith.

The report said second-placed Saudi Arabia, which bans public practice of any faith but Islam, has a growing Christian population because of its migrant workers and some converts it says converted after watching Christian satellite television.

"Christians risk further persecution and oppression in the future due to the rising number of converts and their boldness in sharing their faith," it said.

Amalayer comes out in Philippine spoof of Gangnam Style! (Don't forget to click video below! Suggest you share your comments way way down below after the video....)

Humor is one of the great natural resources of the Philippines and for centuries a survival mechanism of the Filipino people against Spanish (also briefly Japanese) colonial oppression as well as against 20th century political shennanigans of local overlords.

Spoof of South Korea's Oppa Gangnam Style, watch and listen to this funny and fun Philippine parody called "Opo Pinoy Style".

Apart from highlighting various Philippine cultural and other features as well as idiosyncracies, my La Consolacion College Manila student Paula Jamie Salvosa well-known for the 2012 viral video "Amalayer" is also featured twice in this hilarious, entertaining and ingenious video by Filipino-Canadian Mikey Bustos.

Paging the Department of Tourism (DOT), this is better than any of your promotional videos or advertisements about the Philippines!

'Amalayer' girl bounces back with new viral video

By  | Yahoo! Southeast Asia Newsroom – 1 hour 15 minutes ago

Once the object of online criticism for a video which showed her berating a security guard, "Amalayer Girl" Paula Jamie Salvosa is now back on netizens' radar.

Salvosa is now featured in another viral video, which rides on the global popularity of pop hit "Gangnam Style" to highlight Pinoy pride.

The video entitled "Opo Pinoy Style" was produced by HeadingUp Productions and Filipino-Canadian artist Mikey Bustos.

Viewed nearly 800,000 times as of writing since it was posted Jan. 4, the video underscores Pinoy tourist spots, food, traditions and even idiosyncracies.

"Opo", the Filipino way of saying yes respectfully or when addressing elders, replaces "Oppa" in the Psy's original video, which means "older brother" in Korean.

Salvosa, who now apparently has embraced online fame, appears in the video mouthing "Amalayer," a term coined when her video spread like wildfire online in November.
