Good News! Vice-President Jojo Binay calls for revisit of the economic provisions of Philippine Constitution.

Good news! Philippine Vice-President Jejomar "Jojo" Binay is correct, his views similar to that of Speaker Feliciano "Sonny" Belmonte, Jr. on the urgent need for reforming the restrictive economic provisions of the Philippine Constitution which have so far discouraged huge inflows of foreign investments.

Vice-President Binay voiced these progressive, pro-people and reformist views to media at the sidelines of a meeting of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), the Makati Business Club (MBC) and the Management Association of the Philippines (MAP).

Let all of us citizens voice our support for these proposed reforms, which shall hopefully make our Philippine economy globally-competitive compared to our Asean and Asian neighbors!

We need more foreign direct investments (FDIs) for more new factories and big enterprises, so we can create more jobs in the Philippines, instead of restricting entry of foreign investments which causes our perennially high unemployment problem and which forces millions of hardworking Filipnos to go abroad for work.

I am sharing this latest news report from philstar.com and Xinhua News Agency:

Binay calls for revisit of restrictive policies to economic growth

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Vice President Jejomar Binay today called for a revisit of the Southeast Asian country's restrictive policies that hinders economic growth.

At the sidelines of the Joint Membership Meeting of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, the Makati Business Club and the Management Association of the Philippines, Binay underscored the need to liberalize laws with economic provisions in pursuance of the government mantra of inclusive growth.

"I have taken the position that we should at least, for starters, revisit measures that gets in the way of inclusive growth. We can start with the economic provisions of the constitution," he told reporters during the regular forum of businessmen.

He added that the required legislative changes are not imperative on President Aquino's term but would certainly need the push of national government.

"Though it the fastest route, let me express my concern that the Congress itself may insert provisions that are not of economic orientation at all. That is as scenario that I am truly afraid might happen," he said.

He also expressed concern that alleged path to liberalization should be able to prepare Philippine businesses and the economy for global competitiveness.

Earlier, a group of local businessmen also urged the national government to soften the restrictive policies under the nationalistic provisions of the constitution.

The group of businessmen is seeking for an amendment of the economic provisions in the constitution to allow the entry of more foreign direct investments and a leeway for small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) to grow and develop.

The group is apprehensive over the seeming reluctance of foreign companies to invest in the Philippines despite improved credit and investments ratings.

Businessmen are citing inconsistencies on policies and "disrespect of contracts" as several of the more obvious reasons for slow investments.

I believe this tycoon's eldest son Donald Trump, Jr. should publicly apologize to the Philippies and all people concerned with the environment for his errors regarding the U.S. navy ship stuck in Tubbataha Reef in western Philippines here in Asia. Don Trump is wrong, and he should be humble enough to apologize.

Here's the news report from the Philippine Star newspaper yesterday which angered many people like me:

Trump Jr says US ship 'more important' than damaged reef

MANILA, Philippines - The son of American billionaire Donald Trump expressed disappointment over the dismantling of US Navy minesweeper stranded on the Philippines's Tubbataha reef, saying the move was "stupid" as the ship is "more important" than the marine sanctuary.

Businessman Donald "Don" Trump, Jr. reacted on the proposal to cut up the $277-million ship and said the damage on the coral reef does not cost as much as the pricey Navy vessel.

"Yes, a $277-million boat is more important than a 200x50 section of reef that has already been run over," Trump said on his Twitter account on early Thursday morning (Manila time)..

The American businessman also reacted to an ensuing thread on the microblogging site to explain to a fellow American who said that the cost of the ship may be lesser than cleanup expenses as well as US' payment to the Philippine government for damages.

"Please, cleanup costs? The ship is (stranded on a) 200 by 50 at most on the edge of the reef. It hit and stopped. Give me a break ... That is not worth 277 million by any standard." he added.

Trump, who recently visited the country for the ground breaking of Trump Tower in Manila, also responded to Filipinos on Twitter who further questioned his opinion on the ship's greater worth.

"I don't like that it happened but if you took $2 billion in (revenues) and take the ratio (of damage) from earlier its rather minimal," Trump said, referring to the $2.5 billion economic value of reefs in Southeast Asia.

He also said that cutting up the ship would take months as well as other significant resources that would not justify its lost value.

"Pull it off (sic) rather than spend months tearing it up. How do you take apart a ship without other ships?" Trump added.

The late civil rights activist, defender of minorities and Christian minister Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was not only a courageous and inspiring leader, he was also remarkably eloquent.

He not only fought for minority rights, equality, social justice and the realization of true democracy in his country America, but his non-violent struggle will forever be an inspiration for all peoples worldwide.

Below is information I received yesterday from the USA Embassy in Manila about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day which is a public holiday in America and all American embassies.

Here is information I received yesterday from the United States of America (U.S.A.) Embassy in Manila, the Philippines regarding the holiday in honor of this people's hero:

U.S. EMBASSY TO CLOSE ON JANUARY 21

The Embassy of the United States in Manila and its affiliated offices will be closed to the public on Monday, January 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, an American holiday.

The Embassy will resume its services on Tuesday, January 22.

The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968), who is remembered in the United States on the third Monday of January each year, is perhaps best known as America’s chief spokesman for nonviolent activism as a result of his leadership role in the U.S. civil rights movement.

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation into law making King’s birthday a federal holiday.

In 1994, the U.S. Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr.holiday as a national day of service, calling on Americans from every walk of life to volunteer their time and effort on that day to help realize King’s vision of a "beloved community."
